Social media is a tricky marketing beast. It seems like every other day there is a new rule or standard about posting frequency, length, time, etc. There is a year old article at Adespresso that still has some really good advice if you’re having a time of it on Facebook.
But remember, at the end of the day, it’s all about what your audience / target market wants and needs. It’s not what we “want” to post on social media but what they want to see and what your target market finds valuable!
If Facebook is your main focus, take a look at the Adespresso article, it might come in handy. But with any and all advice, social media can be a lot of trial and error. You need to see what your followers are responding to and interacting with. That’s the most important thing.
Engagement is key
Questions are certainly a great way to get your followers to interact with your page. It’s a way to encourage comments, but not always shares. Whereas photos or videos can encourage shares and sometimes comments as well. Just make sure the content is something your target audience would really appreciate.
It doesn’t always have to be related to your work, it can be fun seasonal greetings, other industry information, humor, things that make one ponder, life hacks or wholesome cartoons you think would sit well with your customers.
Review your insights
As you experiment with growing your social media audiences keep an eye on your audience insights to see what is and what very much is not working for you. Keep track of it and your audiences are sure to grow!
But as we approach the latest Election Day do take head of this warning- avoid posting political posts or news related posts to your business page unless it’s relevant to your business. And do check sources. With the new “fake news” reporting policies on Facebook in particular you could find yourself having permissions taken away if someone reports your posts even falsely. Facebook can temporarily ban you from posting or sharing which obviously hinders your social media presence.
Share the Love – Help other biz owners
And always, always, be sure to share your posts with relevant audiences. If you have a post about a partner business, a special event or something else you can share the post to that individual page so they see it. That way you each get a little social media boost. Two birds, one stone. I scratch your back, you scratch mine. But it isn’t always about what you can get out of what you do because Givers Gain and it will come back to you ten fold.
If you haven’t had a lot of social media work recently, take it a week at a time. Practice a certain kind of posting method each week and see how it plays out. That way you have the best opportunity to study your audiences and make sure you’re meeting everyone’s needs!
